Beauty - Exfoliate it!

Skin is responsible for a quarter of the body's detoxification each day.

Pure Know How looks at ways to reduce the toxins going on or into our bodies; today we want to highlight the ways to remove them.

Why do you care?

  • Our body rids itself of toxins in many ways, including through the largest organ of the body, our skin.
  • Toxicity can build beneath the skins' surface contributing to a variety of skin problems and conditions.
  • Sloughing off dead skin cells that sit on the top layer of the skin can tighten and stimulate cell renewal to revitalize skin while the outer body stimulation helps strengthen the lymphatic, hormone and immune systems, aids digestion and decreases cellulite. Sign me up for a good scrub-a dub-dub!
  • Another plus, it can increase the production of sebum, the skin's natural oil, thus providing additional moisturizing for your skin.
  • Avoid products with harsh chemicals that dry the skin like alcohols and detergents (SLS's), known carcinogens like TEA and synthetic colours, scents and preservatives. Check out our Ingredients to Avoid and Safer Preservatives.

The Know How

  • Pure Know How Beauty Expert, Jennifer Valentino from Sweet Violet outlines two approaches to exfoliate:
    • Dry Brushing
    • Body Exfoliating or Polishing
  • Natural "grit" ingredients that slough those dead skin cells:
    • Salt - slightly grittier and irregular in shape; Dead Sea salts particularly therapeutic.
    • Sugars - gentle enough face and a body; also a natural anti-microbial agent that does not spoil over time.
    • Almond meal, Oatmeal, Cornmeal, Orange Peel, Rose Powder, Pecan Powder, Nutmeg Powder, Clove Powder and other natural ingredients.
  • Look for scrub products that use natural oils like jojoba, almond, or extra-light olive and are scented with essential oils.
  • Do-it-yourself scrubs: cornmeal mixed with warm water and apply gently to face.
  • Careful not to "over-exfoliate" - irritation can damage the protective skin barrier resulting in moisture loss and increased susceptibility to absorption of other harmful chemicals. That's why the natural stuff with healing oils is a smart choice!

Know and Tell

  • Patti's awareness of body polishes has grown since she was sent an amazing scrub to try ... she has now tried quite a few and regularly exfoliates her skin away! See Product Reviews.
  • Tamey has used a dry brush for about a year and feels it works well; she especially loves it on her back. She has also tried several scrubs over the last few months and has been amazed at how different each one is.
