Our Product Review - Deodorant

Brand Name: Simply Devine Botanicals

Product Name: Crystal Ally - Unscented and Crystal Ally - Lemongrass

Cost: $19.00 for 120ml

Where did we get it? Where have we seen it?: Oresta Organics

Tester: Patti and Tamey

Rating (out of 5): 4 - 4.5

Comments: Patti likes the pump spray - 2 squirts and is on. Sometimes the liquid drips down but I'm used to it now and apply after shower instead of when getting dressed. So far so good. This may be the "hope in a blue bottle" for an effective natural deodorant.

Tamey thinks this product is amazing. So far it has passed the synthetic clothing test, the moving quick and working-up a sweat test and once the hot weather arrives she may be able to move this product to a 5.

Oresta: "Finally a deodorant that works. Keeps me dry & odour-free. I do feel wetness when working out but there is no odour. Easy to apply spray. Must shake bottle before using. Pricey but effective. Refreshing lemongrass scent. Also available in Lavender, Unscented and Keep Abreast of It (to stimulate lymphatic stimulation) scents."

Ingredients: Unconditional Love and Gratitude, Crystalized Mineral Salts, Organic Whole-leaf Aloe Vera, Angstrom Silver and Zinc, 24kt Gold, and Liposome Vitamin C. For Lemongrass: Unconditional Love and Gratitude, Crystalized Mineral Salts, Organic Whole-leaf Aloe Vera, Angstrom Silver and Zinc, 24kt Gold, Liposome Vitamin C and Essential Oils.

Product Name: Lavender Deodorant Stick - with GSE, Witch Hazel and Aloe Vera

Cost: $5.99 - 7.99 for 75g

Where did we get it? Where have we seen it?: Can't remember, but likely a Natural Health Food Store?

Tester: Patti

Rating (out of 5): 4.0

Comments: OK - we know that all "natural and chemical free" deodorants are not created equal. I have tried many frogs in my day and have found one prince of a stick that generally works for me. But I am concerned about 2 ingredients - propylene glycol and grapefruit seed extract. I will try to find out if the propylene glycol is natural vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol or a synthetic petro-chemical mix. Grapefruit seed extract is an excellent preservative but some recent reports show that may be a hormone disrupter. Until I figure this out - I'm not giving up on this one.

Update: We heard back from the manufacturer and they "advised the Propylene Glycol in the deodorant is synthetic".

Ingredients: Deionized Water, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Sterate, Witch Hazel Distillate, Aloe Vera Gel, Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE), Lavender Oil, Ylang Ylang oil, Lemon Oil, Eucalyptus Oil.

Brand Name: Jason

Product Name: Naturally Fresh Deodorant Stick for Women

Cost: $5.99 - 7.99 for 70g

Where did we get it? Where have we seen it?: Natural health food store, large food store (like Superstore in their Natural Food Store)

Tester: Patti

Rating (out of 5): 2.5

Comments: This stick was barely a pass. I used it over the hot and steamy summer months. It was not very effective in odour control - more than a few of my "peps" had asked me if I was using that natural deodorant again! From what I am learning about deodorant is that they work on neutralizing the bacteria when we sweat. This one doesn't work with my body chemistry. Although, it is an organic product, formulated without alcohol and aluminum chlorohydrate.

Ingredients: Sunflower Seed Oil*, Behenyl Alcohol, Cocoa Seed Butter*, Lavender Extract*, Calcium Starch Octenylsuccinate, Emulsifying Wax NF, Corn Starch*, Witch Hazel Extract, Green Tea Leaf Extract, Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E), Lichen Extract, Bisbolol, Shea Butter Fruit, Zinc Ricinoleat, Sodium Bicarbonate, Silica, Soyethyl Morpholinium Ethosulfate, Pathenol (Vit. B5), Caramel, Annatto. *Certified Organic

Brand Name: Deodorant Stones of America

Product Name: Pure & Natural Crystal Deodorant Stone

Cost: under $10.00 for 120g

Where did we get it? Where have we seen it?: Natural Health Food Store

Testers: Patti

Rating (out of 5): 4.0

Comments: This product has one thing going for it - it only contains only 1 ingredient - mineral salts. Specifically, potassium alum, a natural aluminum salt, not the aluminum compounds that is a concern in many deodorants and antiperspirants. How does this stick, or rock crystal as it is sometime referred to, work? You run the stick under water and apply to clean underarm area. It leaves an invisible layer of the mineral salts on skin and stops odour causing bacteria.
It lets your skin breath and does not inhibit normal perspiration. Did it work for Patti? Pretty much - but it hasn't had the summer heat test yet. For now, it I am keeping it in my deodorant shelf in the bathroom.

Comments: You know what? This roll-on works really well if you are wearing natural clothing and if you're not moving too fast. Otherwise you get stinky.

Comments: Again this product is OK when activity level is low, but once you begin to move it just doesn't do the trick.
